I'm guessing Medium certainly has a bot issue. But as I have seen many writers and myself inclueded having a big drop in followers over night, I'm assuming that Medium is trying to clear up the bot accounts.

From years on social media platforms I would assume that it never really pays in the long term to buy fake followers. you can never get away from actually having to get your head down and do the work.
