An interesting study, as you say it goes against what the industry has been telling us for a long time.
This is however just one study and from reading (skimming) through it, it would seem that further research would be needed.
I also note that they were measuring strength gains, though they didn't see any. The participants also were given a resistance training programme and not a specific strength training programme. Would the results differ with strength specific training?
I'd also consider that more long term research is required for this dismissal of protein to be fully proved. A ,onger term study could give a better indication of strength and muscle loss prevention rather than focusing only on gains.
